1:15 PM: Next was the Hôtel des Invalides. This was built by Louis XIV for his wounded soldiers.

Hôtel originally meant something more like "residence," before it came to mean what it does today. Napoleon is buried in this building, so I guess now it's his residence.

The gold dome is brilliant in the sun, but this photo doesn't do such a great job of showing that. Stupid low-resolution scanner.
